Should these Amazing Islands be on your Bucket List?

Nestled in the Ionian sea between Italy and Greece the Ionian Islands are traditionally named Eptanissa which in Greek translates to “Seven Islands”.  The reason being there are seven main islands (in this complex of about 20), which are the largest or most popular. They include Kerkyra (Corfu), Paxos (Paxi), Lefkada (Leucas), Ithaki (Ithaca), Kefalonia (Cephalonia), Zakynthos (Zante) and Kythira (Cythera).

Their unsurpassed natural beauty, breathtaking beaches and picturesque villages combined with the Venetian influence, makes this group of islands a notable summer destination for Greeks and international Tourists alike.

Here are a few of my top reasons why should you make one or even a few of these islands part of your next trip to Greece:

For the beaches, secluded coves, and sea caves – From the famous Navagio (Shipwreck) beach on Zakinthos to Myrtos Beach of Kefalonia as well as Porto Katsiki and Egremnoi beaches of Lefkada, swim in a few of the award-winning crystal clear emerald waters of these islands.

For the natural habitats – The bay of Laganas on the island of Zakynthos is one of the most important shelters of the Caretta Caretta turtle which is on the endangered species list. You can also find the Monachus Monachus monk seal near the secluded caves on the island. They are thought to be among the rarest mammal species in the world

For the exotic landscape – Admire lush vegetation and beautiful mountainous regions such as the breathtaking the Nydri waterfalls in Lefkada, as well as the Melissani and Drogarati caves in Kefalonia.

For the choice of what type of vacation you prefer – Whether it be cosmopolitan with a lively nightlife (Corfu, Zakynthos, Lefkada and Kefalonia) or a more quiet and relaxed atmosphere at Paxos, Ithaki and Kythira.

Quiet Kioni village in Ithaca

For the History and Culture – Visit the UNESCO protected Old town of Corfu where you can marvel at remarkable examples of 15th century Venetian engineering in the Old Town. You can read a complete article on this island in my recent post on Corfu as well as a previous post on all the UNESCO protected heritage sites in Greece.

For the unique architecture and traditional Villages – The Venetian influence reflects in the architecture, customs and traditions. You can see that influence scattered around in fortresses, mansions, churches and other buildings that were constructed during that time.

For the Mythology – For the Homer enthusiasts, the beautiful island of Ithaca (Ithaki) was the homeland of Odysseus (Ulysses) in Homer’s epic poem “Odyssey”. This is where Penelope waits for him for twenty years to return from the Trojan War.

For the cuisine – Savor local specialties such as Pastitsada and Bourdeto on Corfu, Sifigado (Lefkada) Aliada (Kefalionia), Stifado and Nouboulo on Zakinthos. Taste the local ladotyri cheese and scrumptious olive oil rusks. Accompany with the local wines such as Robola (Kefalonia), Vertzami (Lefkada) as well as Kumquat liqueur (Corfu).
