Who said Greece isn’t a winter travel destination?

Some of my favorite and most memorable vacations in Greece were during the fall and winter months. I’ve celebrated many Christmas, New Year and Easter holidays in the Greek countryside or on beautiful mountainous regions.

Below, you will find the first in a series of my favorite winter (or shall I say, not-summer) destinations.

Arachova / Mount Parnassos / Delphi

These three sites can satisfy every traveler’s taste. They combine history, sports and relaxation all in one trip. What more could one ask?

Arachova became well-known since the construction of the famous Parnassos Ski resort.  The “Winter Mykonos” as it is referred to today, has lots to offer the visitor. This picturesque village boasts a stunning mountainous landscape with a breathtaking view over the entire valley below.

The perfect destination if you are looking to enjoy winter sports or just hang-out in this bustling hotspot.  Many Athenians escape to Arachova on the weekends and holidays just to breathe in the clean mountain air.

You can walk the cobblestone streets and visit some of the “Traditional houses” to discover the charm of this quaint village. You may also visit the Ethnographic Museum which offers weaving and embroidery lessons.

Other great ways to explore the area are by hiking, trekking or biking one of the numerous mountain trails.

Arachova offers many first-class hotels and luxury guesthouse accommodations that fit any budget. You will find traditional restaurants, tavernas, plenty of bars and nightlife which complements its cosmopolitan charm.

Mount Parnassus – For skiing, snowboarding or snow-skating

Parnassos is one of the most beautiful mountains in Greece. Its stunning natural beauty, covered with dense vegetation fascinates the visitor in winter and summer alike.

The Ski Center is the largest and most technologically advanced resort in Greece. Located near the capital, it’s the center of choice for the Athenians.  Parnassus has an altitude between, 1,640 and 2,457 meters at its highest peak.  The resort operates from December through April.

History

The ski resort began operating in 1976 with only one major ski run. Today, the Center has 23 slopes, 7 ski runs and 7 trails, geared for all levels of skiing difficulty. There are 12 off-piste “black” runs with really deep snow for added adventure.

Facility

The Resort has 13 main modern lifts and 4 beginner lifts. The main lifts include 6 overhead decks (2 eight-seat cabins, 3 combinations with eight cabins / six-seat chair & 1 four seat chair), 1 fixed air chair (two seats) and 6 slides, located at Kellaria and Fterolaka.

Paragliding is another way of discovering Mt Parnassos.  The launch point is near Livadi, from which you can glide over Delphi or as far as the Corinthian Gulf.

The area offers trails and cycling routes. The center has a ski school, rental and sale of ski equipment. On site you will enjoy various leisure facilities and dining spots.  In addition, you will find medical services on site.

Archeological site of Delphi- For the history

If you haven’t already been to Delphi, now is the time to do so. Just a mere 8 km from Arachova, you can spend a wonderful day exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site and museum.Visit

History

This sanctuary was considered the center of the world (omphalos or navel).  According to ancient mythology, Zeus released two eagles from the opposite side of the universe. The point where they met was Delphi.

For many centuries Delphi was the religious and culture center of the Hellenic world. It is home to the famous “Oracle” who would predict outcomes of wars and other events.

It is said that this “Oracle” or “Pythia” (priestess) successfully predicted events such as the Trojan War and the Argonaut’s expedition.

The site

The Temple Of Apollo

Considered to be one of the most magnificent temples in Greece.  The ancient ruins date back to 300 BC.

Visitors can also admire two sanctuaries, the remains of three temples, gymnasium, baths and other buildings, and the settlement of Delphi located outside the walls.

Don’t forget to visit the Castalias spring where the travelers would wash themselves before consulting the Oracle.

The museum

The Archaeological Museum of Delphi is one of the most important in Greece. It focuses on the history of the oracle and sanctuary. One can admire numerous ancient statues and artifacts including the exquisite statue of the bronze Charioteer.

In the winter the archaeological site and museum are open daily from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
